Soup for Weight Loss

Did you know that people who eat soup daily lose more weight than those who eat the same amount of calories from other sources? Here’s one of my favorite nutritious, low-salt recipes.

Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients:
1 butternut squash (or other winter squash), peeled and diced into 1/2-inch pieces
1 small onion or 1 brunch scallions, chopped
3 to 4 leaves Chinese cabbage, chopped
1 celery stalk, diced
1 small piece wakame seaweed, cut into bite-size pieces
3 tablespoons garbanzo miso (or other light miso)
2 tablespoons tamari
1 cilantro sprig, for garnish

Preparation:
1. Bring 2 quarts water to a boil in a stockpot over moderately high heat.
2. Add squash, onion, cabbage, celery and seaweed.
3. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer about 40 minutes or until vegetables are softened.
4. Combine miso, tamari into a small amount of the broth. Stir until miso and tamari dissolve. Then mix back into soup.
5. Server in a bowl and garnish with a sprig of cilantro.

Live long, strong and happy,
Dr. Mao

Paris Hilton's Diet Secret

Paris Hilton has some rather unconventional diet advice. A die-hard fan of McDonald’s and Taco Bell, she recommends eating chocolate, fast food and lasagna, and drinking Coca-Cola, she revealed in her book, Confessions of an Heiress. Although this eating plan may sound off the wall, don’t lose faith just yet! The bleached blonde fashionista also encourages readers to eat plenty of sushi, which is packed with antioxidant-rich veggies, seaweed and heart-healthy fish.

She also enjoys cooking meals at home, which can save both money and calories. Paris recommends staying away from diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, and says to drink the real version instead. Although drinking Coca-Cola may not seem like a diet tip that doctors would stand behind, the svelte diva is right in cautioning her audience to be wary of diet foods. Just because a food has “diet” in the name doesn’t mean that you should be eating it.

The heiress also believes that life is too short to deprive yourself of the foods you really love. While this doesn’t give you the license to binge on candy all day, it’s important to indulge from time to time and enjoy your favorite foods in moderation. After all, eating well shouldn’t be about deprivation.

Brain Stimulation May Help In Weight Loss

Implanting electrodes in brain to lose weight is now the latest approach to tackle obesity and weight loss.

With health experts warning on obesity complications, many medical research centers and drug companies are working on fresh and better methods to deal with weight gain and obesity.

With the development of effective diet pills such as Alli, freshly the focus has been on prescription diet pills. Even there has also been an increasing rise in the gastric surgery for weight loss, which reduces the fat that body absorbs.

But in the U.S., the latest approach to tackling obesity is even more drastic. Deep brain stimulation (DBS), as it is known, involves inserting electrodes into the brain to deliver tiny bursts of electricity to alter the patient’s behavior.
